About Danielle McLarty
Hi I’m Danielle,
I’m a Canadian Certified Counsellor and have been working within the field of mental health since 2010. I offer mental health support through phone or video for people of all different backgrounds and am an ally to the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities. Along with therapy for individuals, I also provide relationship counselling - focused primarily around building communication skills (ideal for couples about to begin living together or for pre-marriage preparation).
What You Can Expect In Our Counselling Sessions
In sessions, you can trust that my goal is to support you! I am here to provide a welcoming environment so you can feel comfortable and safe to explore your heart and mind. My approach to therapy is through a trauma-informed and supportive lens. I’m trained in several mental health modalities including CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), Somatic Experiencing, Mindfulness Based Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other Person-Centered approaches.Choice of modality and how it will be used in our sessions depends on whether you have a particular interest in one of these areas. Otherwise, these skills are simply tools in my mental health toolkit, and we may utilize several throughout the course of our time together as needed and will be decided on collaboratively.
The Story of How I Became a Therapist
In grade school, while other kids were playing house, I was playing “therapist” with my friends. It was a kind of “Charlie Brown and Lucy” situation where I’d have someone sit on my “couch” and I’d conduct my sessions. Oh, how much I had to learn! In high school, I read the mental health memoir, “Girl, Interrupted” and it was a defining moment for me where I felt drawn to therapy as a career choice, rather than just a curiosity, and I decided to take psychology in university.
My journey from the end of that book to the start of my career was one filled with many ups and downs. Moments of questioning what path to take, and who knew best for my career. At one point there came a time where I had to push back against my own inner need to please others - and not pursue a Ph. D. - but rather move forward with a person-first mental health approach to counselling. This decision is one that at the time I truly struggled with, but came to be proud of, as I ultimately shaped my life, career, and practice in a way that aligned with my values.
I’ve had so many amazing experiences working with clients who deeply needed the human connection of therapy. I strive to practice from a heart-centered perspective that acknowledges the complexities of all beings rather than looking through a narrow lens of pathology. I have also benefited from seeing my own therapist and I think that being on both sides of “the couch” in therapy has helped me to more greatly understand those who come to see me for counselling.
Now I am a counselling therapist in private practice. I am also a active board member of the Manitoba Chapter of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association - where I am helping to bring more clarity and consistency to the field of counselling therapy in Manitoba through provincial regulation.I Support a Mix of Different Mental Health Concerns and Life Challenges.
When it comes to counselling and therapy, I’ve provided care to a diverse range of people seeking support. I’ve worked with teachers, professionals, students, and parents struggling with a variety of concerns such as ADHD, trauma, eating disorders, stress, anxiety and depression. Part of my job as a mental health professional is to always be learning and continuing my education. I have a great interest in embodied areas of mental health, specifically Somatic Experiencing. This is a form of therapy that has you listen to your nervous system and body, and be more aware of what it may be trying to tell you. Anyone can benefit from this form of therapy, but especially those with a history of trauma or anxiety.
